Chronology of cameras Beck R J
This peculiar camera was dedicated to microscopic photography. For this purpose, it was attached in place of the eyepiece of a microscope. Finding such a model from Beck is not surprising since the brand, since its foundation in 1843, specialized in the manufacturing of optical devices: microscopes, telescopes, equipment for opticians, and this was before becoming a manufacturer of high-quality cameras, often technologically advanced. The camera is simple but well-built, made of black lacquered metal. A large wheel on the side allows for opening the back to insert perforated 35mm film. A second wheel on the top of the body advances the film. Gearing advances the frame counter. There is no lens at the front of the camera since the microscope serves that purpose. It features an Epsilon shutter, manufactured by Barnet Ensign Ross. The shutter speed can be adjusted. There is an aperture adjustment marked Open and Shut, but with a continuous aperture adjustment between these two positions. An element is inserted between the camera and the microscope to allow for aiming. The triggering can be done either by the lever on the side of the shutter or by a cable release. The obtained images are circular, with a diameter of 22 mm. On the back of this specimen, there is a marking "Beck London," without the "RJ," indicating a relatively late origin, confirmed by the use of the Epsilon shutter that appeared towards the end of the 1940s. |

In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
